Nephropathologie

Nephropathology at the Department of Pathology

Nephropathology deals with non-tumorous diseases of the kidney, particularly inflammatory kidney diseases and pathological changes in systemic disorders. The primary focus is on kidney biopsies, which are performed both to diagnose primary kidney diseases and to detect possible rejection reactions after transplantation. In addition, surgical specimens and explanted kidneys from transplant procedures are examined.

The Department of Pathology, with its dedicated nephropathology diagnostic team, serves as a national center for nephropathological examinations. It has an internationally recognized scientific focus on investigating kidney diseases and transplant rejection

The nephropathology working group offers diagnostic services for renal and transplant biopsies to numerous referring physicians across Austria. This highly specialized area of histological diagnostics requires intensive communication between pathologists and clinicians.

Therefore, we hold clinical-pathological case conferences twice a month. These multidisciplinary meetings involve nephrologists from the referring hospitals and are conducted virtually via WebEx. Digital slides of cases are presented promptly, discussed with the referring experts, and reviewed in the context of current literature.
